SUMMER 300x266 Preparing Your Jet Ski for SummerWith the weather heating up and thoughts turning to summer holidays, many people will be getting their jet ski out of storage and preparing it for another summer of fun. However, with your jet ski being stored for such a long time, it might not be run exactly as it should and you may have to put in a little work before you can take it out. This quick guide will run you through a few checks to go through before you set off.

Hopefully, when you stowed your jet ski away for the winter, you winterized it (i.e. filled the tank with a stabilizer/fuel mixture). If you did this, you shouldn’t have too many problems getting it running again. However, if you didn’t (and who can say they’ve always done what they knew they were supposed to do?) you might have a few problems.

Task 1: Checking the Lines Run the tips of your fingers up and down the fuel line. Be very sure that there are no cracks in it. Also check there are no areas where cracks may develop (areas that have been worn thin over the winter). Once you have done that, perform the same checks on the cooling lines to check they are holding up well.

Task 2: General Cleaning Leaving you jet ski to sit over the winter will most likely mean that it will have some cobwebs, dust and other detritus on it. Give the outside of the jet ski a good once over. In particular, check the exhaust is entirely clear.

Task 3: Check the Spark Plugs The spark plugs of your jet ski are very vulnerable to moisture. After being left over winter, there’s a fair chance that rust may have developed in this area. Have a good look over the bores to check that this is not the case.

Task 4: Carburettor Check Dust is the main enemy over the winter when it comes to the carburettor. Be sure to remove any dust to ensure that your engine is not damaged.

Task 5: The Gas Tank How much of a problem you face with this stage depends on how thoroughly winterized your jet ski was. Empty the fuel in the tank and run some fresh fuel through the engine. You might find that some areas are clogged. Hopefully, running the new fuel through will dislodge these. If the clogged areas need an extra bit of work, try adding some STA-BIL to give it an extra going over.

This process of summerizing your jet ski should set you up for an enjoyable summer. Be sure to follow a maintenance regime after every trip and you should have plain sailing all summer.

People, for years have been hyped with the jet ski craze. Everyone, even when the price of a unit is high and they don’t normally go out to open waters and do waves still show some extent of interest on buying one.

Jet skis are unquestionably a choice when it comes to personal watercraft. They are sleek, maneuverable, practical in terms of the price as compared with larger vessels and very light. In fact, because of these qualities, jet skis are no longer contained in the recreational activity category. It is fastly becoming a form of transportation these days.

Due to the extreme public acceptance of this watercraft, businesses are now on the race of producing their own versions of jet skis in the effort of outdoing the market and the competition that it covers. All these mean only one thing- that consumers are faced with great varieties of jet ski models and products with equally enormous dealers who contend over the possibilities of making a sell.

Because of extreme competition for the market, dealers of jet ski device their own means of capturing portions of it. We have provided you some tips here that will help spot which dealer you should buy from and which actually deliver what they promised. Please read on.

Nothing beats an informed customer. If you know something about the stuff you are to buy, you are more or less likely to get the value that you are expecting. Salesmen are salesmen because they have the capacity to sell their ideas. How may times in the past have we bought something because we were convinced that they will benefit from them without the initial intention of buying? Well, that is selling power.

Always demand quality but be reasonable. Of course quality is a relative attribute and everyone has his or her perception of what a quality Jet Ski is. Well, it all lies in the mind. You have to know what makes a product worth buying and it will be only you who would determine that for yourself. Always assure to it that you can trust the product, even if it were bought second hand.

Always ask questions from the dealers of jet ski. This way, you will know if they themselves are informed of the product they are trying to sell on you. They should not only present you their selling points but also some of the most interesting facts about jet skis. But beware, these may affect the price and your decision.

Jet Ski Insurance Options

What exactly made jet skis popular, we can’t tell. It might be for the powerful acceleration or the general design. Or water maneuverability or fun of riding it. Or simply because its uses cater a large spectrum of audience including recreational activities for families or heart-pounding experiences for thrill seekers.

However, personal watercrafts such as the jet ski is not a toy. It can take you to slopes where hazards meet. Thus the need for an assurance that you will be covered in case troubles arise.

The insurance industry is aware of this that’s why we are provided with personal watercraft insurance coverage that will level with your personal needs. The ownership of jet skis created the special demand for a special insurance that will cover the rider, passengers and the vehicle itself- depending on the agreement as imposed by the insurance company.

Jet ski insurance provides coverage over damages such as those that are covered by accidents, perils, theft, fire, lightning, windstorm and vandalism. Obviously, these coverage is board so be sure to read the small fonts to see what’s hidden in them.

On normal circumstances, the coverage of the jet ski insurance extends to the auxiliary equipments and machinery of the craft, sometimes even to personal properties.

Again, depending on the contract a jets ski insurance can either provide coverage for the physical damage based on the Actual Cash Value of the property or on the Agreed Amount Value. These two are practically alike in some principles but there appear someone huge differences that must be considered deeply.

The latter covers policies that are based on the set amount (done by you and the insuring company) for the property. Therefore, in the event of damage or loss, you will be given the value that you yourself set upon the day of agreement. In the event of partial loss, given that there is no deduction on the depreciation value, your item may actually be replaced with new ones. However, this jet ski insurance basis could somehow demand the Actual Cash Vale of specific devices that are limited in the watercraft itself.

Policies based on the Actual Cash Value, however, are dependent on the current value of the equipment on the time of loss or damage. It will be based on the present market value that is shared commonly in pricing guides.

These two aside, several insurance company have other variations of jet ski insurance that are customized to serve your needs. Only you have to seek the one that would accommodate you best.

Jet Ski And Sea Doo Story

SeaDoo 300x173 Jet Ski And Sea Doo StoryJet Ski and Sea Doo are two brand names that have become generic names for stand-up and sit-down personal water craft (PWC) respectively. But just like any other story, these two have their own stories which are closely related to each other. As you are familiar with the names today, Jet Ski is manufactured by Kawasaki while Sea Doo is manufactured by Bombardier.

Here is the brief story:

During the mid-60′s, Bombardier started a project that would create and market a personal water craft. The company lunched its first sit-down model in 1968 with the name Sea-Doo. During that time, the company already had an established market on the snowmobiles. Here, the name Sea-Doo is an altered version of the Ski-Doo (Bombardier’s brand for snowmobiles). Unfortunately, the company has pooled out the Sea-Doo from the market in 1970 just before the new line of Sea-Doo will be released.

This was because there are several problems on the design for the water craft that could not be answered during that time. Technology was insufficient then and to solve the problem means spending a lot of money and engineering, which Bombardier could not afford since the Ski-Doo was so hot in the market.

Meanwhile, as Bombardier discontinued the Ski-Doo, Kawasaki become very aggressive in developing this personal water craft.

On the early part of the 70′s Clayton Jacobson II, the man who gave a lot of inspiration to the Bombardier in term of design and personal water craft specifications, sold the rights to his patent to Kawasaki. This deal gave birth to the Jet Ski.

The Kawasaki Jet Ski was released with a little promise and gave only several hundred sold units. However, in the 80′s, the Jet Ski sales skyrocketed and sold several thousands. Here, the name “Jet Ski” has become the generic name for stand-up personal water craft.

The Bombardier had responded with the rebirth of the Sea-Doo. It did not intend to capture the market of the Jet Ski. Instead, Sea-Doo created a personal water craft that could be used by anyone (since they thought that the Jet Ski was only for athletic people). Bombardier had created Sea-Doo as a sit-down personal water craft. The design of the second generation of Sea-Doo may not be very different from its predecessor but it has already overcome their original problems.

Today, Sea-Doo and Jet Ski are two major manufacturers of personal water crafts and have eared the name on their own.

Typical Jet Ski Injuries

jet ski accident 300x188 Typical Jet Ski InjuriesJet skiers are more likely to get hurt than other boat operators because they are more exposed in an accident. Jet ski accident injuries can be extraordinarily severe.

Head trauma

Chest trauma

Abdomen trauma

Hypothermia

Spinal cord damage

Lacerations

Disfigurement

Carbon monoxide poisoning

Paralysis

Broken bones

Soft tissue injury

Burns

Drowning

Death

Research shows that:

Jet ski accidents statistically cause a greater number of severe injuries than any other type of boat accident

Inherent design defects in jet skis can lead to a higher risk of fire in post-accident situations

Surgical treatment for personal watercraft accidents greatly exceeds that for other watercraft accidents.

Causes of jet ski accidents

Unsafe operation of the jet ski

Speeding

Boating under the influence

Collisions

Young people are hurt the most

Most jet ski injuries involve young people, especially teenagers. In 2002, 17- and 18-year-olds accounted for the highest rates of jet ski injuries. A review of literature and statistics completed by the Coalition of Parents and Families for Personal Watercraft Safety shows that 50% of all jet ski injuries involving children are moderate to severe.

It is a general rule of law that the operator of a jet ski has a duty to exercise the highest degree of care in order to prevent injuries and death to others. Common safety precautions include wearing protective clothing (like a life jacket), keeping distance from other watercraft, paying attention to “no wake” signs and boat traffic, and operating a jet ski defensively.

Different Types of Personal Watercraft

redneck personal watercraft 300x225 Different Types of Personal WatercraftPersonal Watercraft are typically designed for the rider to either sit or stand on. Some are designed for one person, but can carry two; and now they are made in models for three and four people to ride on. They have become more popular in recent years.

Original models were stand-up watercraft, designed for one person. Now, they are a means of entertainment and water transportation capable of holding the whole family.

They have been referred to generically as WaveRunners, Jet skis and SeaDoos, which are actual models of Yamaha, Kawasaki and Bombardier. But much like the Jacuzzi was a term used for every hot tub made until it was clarified as a brand name, there was some confusion in the past.

They have no exterior propeller and are fairly easy to use and affordable. The larger models can even tow a skier or tube behind them. They get good gas mileage, which makes them more affordable than a boat to operate. They have a kill switch, and will typically circle the rider, once they have fallen off.

While they were once equipped with two stroke engines, the majority of the newer models now use a cleaner burning four stroke engine. There are still some issues regarding the safety of personal watercraft, as accidents and deaths have been on the increase with the burgeoning popularity, and many states now require a rider to be 14 years of age to ride alone.

The other negative about the personal watercraft is normally related to some of the daredevil and careless drivers that jump the wakes of larger boats, cut across in front of bigger watercraft at a dangerous distance, and drive too fast for the water conditions, such as waves, obstacles, or currents.

For the most part, the majority of the riders follow the rules and ride them safely and at proper distance from other, larger watercraft. It is recommended that riders wear life vests and neoprene suits for the safest operating conditions.

The most popular brands are Bombardier’s Sea Doo, Yamaha’s Wave Runner and Kawasaki’s Jet Ski. All of these are similar in features, and are top sellers.

The largest personal watercraft is the Sea Doo LRV model, which is 13 foot long and 5 feet wide with 180 gallons worth of storage space, and the largest fuel tank available at 25 gallons. It has enough power to pull a skier with three riders. Bombardier’s Sea Doo has 50.3% of the United States market of sit-down type personal watercraft.

Several manufacturers like Polaris and Arctic Cat have gotten out of the personal watercraft market, leaving fewer competitors, and only the strongest remain. Bombardier, Yamaha and Kawasaki still have strong sales in the most popular units, and consumers are still in love with personal watercraft for fun and transportation.

NSW Maritime has dismissed a push to overturn the ban on jet skis on Sydney Harbour citing public safety concerns.
A recently formed lobby group, Jet Ski Sydney Harbour, approached NSW Maritime with a proposal to allow personal water craft back on Sydney Harbour after they were banned in 2001.
In a letter to Sydney’s Daily Telegraph the group claimed noise and pollution concerns were no longer valid with recent developments in PWC technology.
“The key argument passed through parliament was that jet skis were noisy and bad for the environment, this point was never actually proven,” said Jet Ski Sydney Harbour’s Domenic Favaloro.
“New jet skis are actually quieter than a small runabout boat and that jet propulsion is actually less harmful on the environment than a boats propeller system.”
NSW Maritime dismissed the proposal on the grounds of public safety citing a minority of “hoons” would make the Harbour too dangerous if the ban was overturned.
“NSW Maritime is always happy to hear these sorts of proposals, however I can confirm that Maritime is not going to overturn the ban on PWCs in Sydney Harbour,” said a NSW Maritime spokesman.
“The problem of noise was part of the issue in 2001, but it was only part of the issue … rider behaviour and public safety concerns are still a major issue.”
